American National is seeking a Business Intelligence Specialist III for the Business Intelligence and Analytics Department. This role is available in the League City, TX, Springfield, MO and Glenmont, NY locations.


  • Chair/Attend meetings with Team Members from business enterprise departments (Actuarial, Underwriting, Marketing, IT, and other areas) to understand data needs and structures, assist in developing accurate data definitions, support business users during the implementation and approval process.
  • Liaison with business user for the Business Intelligence & Analytics Team for project work and issue resolution.
  • Oversee the creation and adherence to BI standards in developing and understanding business requirements and design documents, producing simple and technical specifications.
  • Participate in planning the delivery of BI solutions, explaining the design structure and functionality of the deliverable.
  • Develop metadata translation documents for publication to the enterprise for datasets published.
  • Review test results with the business and coordinate necessary adjustments to the deliverables.
  • Obtain user approval and facilitate the migration of deliverables to the locked-up production environment.
  • Respond promptly and work with team to appropriately triage business user's questions, issues, and enhancement requests by serving on an on-call support rotation during business hours.

Qualification, Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning or equivalent work experience (5-7 years) in the business or technical world.
  • 4 to 6 years of experience in developing or documenting data warehouses/data marts or business intelligence solutions.
  • Able to make decisions and recommendations based on research and experience where there are no written procedures with little guidance.
  • Ability to work on multiple initiatives with limited guidance and collaborate with other Team Members.
  • Professional demeanor, strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of insurance business (marketing, accounting, and/or administration) processes and procedures and a Subject Matter Expert in at least one area of insurance business.
  • Ability to determine when to escalate issues that require management level decision making.
  • Hands on experience developing and maintaining metadata and STM (source to target) documentation.
  • Logical and methodical approach to data profiling and requirement analysis with the ability to accurately discern cause and effect.
  • Knowledge of best practices, data modeling techniques, data quality, data cleansing, data transformations.
  • Knowledge of data modeling techniques for target structures such as star schemas, snowflake schemas, and highly normalized data models.
  • Understanding of Business Intelligence reporting tools such as Cognos and Power BI.
