Job Summary

The New Business Underwriting manager will guide and mentor the leadership of the Underwriting department, along with acting as the advocate for that team in business meetings including product, legal, compliance, and actuarial while ensuring that the risk perspective and departmental policies and procedures are followed. The role is strategic and forward thinking in and anticipating the upcoming departmental needs including digital advancement (system needs, data accessibility, etc) and tactical deployment in applying changes that can have an immediate impact on the efficiency and day to day operations. The role is responsible for ensuring the teams have all the information necessary to make good decisions in an efficient manner. This includes system builds and implementations along with issuing profitable business. The New Business Underwriting Manager will develop and leverage cross-functional relationships with sales management, agents, product actuarial and other internal team members, ensures complex underwriting decisions fall within the companys established guidelines and current risk tolerance as well as managing risk assessment of complex specialty products and oversees audits.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides direction to direct reports, manages related costs and impact on functional and business results
  • Oversees day to day operations, sets performance expectations, and recognizes then prevents gaps in operational issues
  • Makes clear, sound, ethical business decisions in regard to agent level, case level, portfolio level and product level underwriting decisions and exceptions
  • Developing underwriting strategy and objectives, and ensure that business and operational issues are addressed in a timely and professional manner in accordance with service level agreements
  • Maintaining effective working relationships with regional sales employees and brokers
  • Process/underwrite complex specialty products
  • Oversees audits as required

Compensation Data

Compensation range for this position is $91,800- $130,000per year, based on experience and qualifications.


Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
7 or more years of Group Voluntary Benefits Underwriting experience is required

Computer/tech savvy to include advanced knowledge of Microsoft applications
